Once upon a time, Ibiza was a spiritual and magical place. Every sunset, people gathered at Jose Padilla’s ornately-decorated little beach-side bar to be hypnotised by his unique sunset DJ mix, staring dreamily out to sea. The first Café Del Mar album encapsulates this mystical experience, beginning light and airy with Jose’s own dolphin-esque “Agua”, progressing to darker, bassier sounds like Underworld and Ver Vlads to represent the sun falling behind the horizon. Jose creates a spellbinding atmosphere by placing oddities such as Penguin Cafe Orchestra, alongside dance tracks that take inspiration from world music and New Age (ethereal female vocals; bongo-lead percussion; samples of self-hypnosis tapes, flutes; wave-sounds). Higlights include the resonant piano and strings of Sabres Of Paradise’s “Smokebelch” beatless mix. The sky fades to black with the gentle ambience of “Sunset At The Café Del Mar”. Café Del Mar was “compiled with love” and thus truly stands the test of time. A great beginning to a classic compilation series.You can also find Vol. 4 & Vol. 8. Enjoy!

History traces the sound back to Bristol’s The Wild Bunch, whose members evolved into Tricky, Massive Attack and Portishead, each bringing their own spin to the form. However, the movement did not remain static there, its influence passing to other cities (London’s Morcheeba) and nationalities, touching Japan (DJ Krush, The Silent Poets), the States (DJ Shadow, Thievery Corporation), France (DJ Cam and later French Touch dramatists La Funk Mob, The Mighty Bop, Dimitri From Paris, Alex Gopher, Llorca and Air) as well as reaching the influential Scandinavian scene (Zero 7). Here, four CDs and 60 tracks later, the trip-hop scene is well documented. A nice collection covering the trip-hop scene from its Bristolian early-nineties conception through to around 2002; a sound which wrapped up the vibes of Reggae, Ragga, Dub, Soul, Jazz and Hip Hop into a glitzy package of downtempo delight.

Nice new 12 track compilation from the guys at Social Beats/Unique featuring new material from The Jazzinvaders, Flowriders, State Of Monc & Monsieur Dubois & some bonus remixes from The Part Time Heroes, Colonel Red & The Jazzinvaders. Early 2006 two leading Dutch representatives, Monsieur Dubois and State Of Monc, initiated a new platform to establish, enpower and expand the scene they are both part of: Nu-Jazz. In the process, two other groups joined in: Flowriders and Jazzinvaders. Nu-Jazz is a style of music that crosses many borders and takes away boundaries; from jazz to jungle, trip-hop to house, dub to disco and broken beat to soul. While respecting traditions and building upon them, nu-jazz creates a new format for improvisation, beats, grooves and ensemble. By founding The Dutch Nu Jazz Movement the bands involved like to acknowledge this growing development in jazzmusic, point out its relevance and create an organization that brings Dutch Nu Jazz to a larger public in- and outside The Netherlands.

Zimpala – Almaviva [2000]

Zimpala are two French DJ’s (DJ BNX and David Walters). ‘Almaviva’ is a delightful juxtaposition of musical styles, combining driving 4/4 floor fillers, swirling Latino flavors, low end theory d ‘n’ b dynamics and blissfull chill out forever vignettes. 2000, “Almaviva”. First piece of work under the banner of Platinum Records. Frédéric Beneix (alias DJ BNX) gathered some of the Bordeaux Electro Scene new talents. Their way of mixing sound samples and acoustic instruments creates a cinematic electro music, clearly attracted to world percussions, Jazz and to the most sensual dance floors. Baseball, one of the album titles was chosen to become the background music of a Motorola commercial.

First time on vinyl, this is the album that Dj Cam did exclusively for the Saint Germain des Pres Cafe series. At the time, first cd was a compilation, and the second one was an exclusive recording from Dj Cam and his quartet. I’ve been a DJ Cam fan since Underground Vibes, and Rebirth of the cool is by far his best realease to date. If this music does not put a smile on your face, you are probably brain dead! Heavy jazz, smooth hip hop beats and basslines, what more could you ask for? Enjoy!

French rapper MC Solaar spends his self-titled album showcasing exactly why he was instantly championed by the hip-hop community as an international talent. This is an excellent collection for someone who is interested in the genre. The mix of songs have a bit of flavor from almost every other music style, and yet taken as a whole, is a very cohesive ensemble. You definitely get an idea of the range of possibilities as well as some guideposts for seeking out specific artists or sub-styles. It’s refreshing to hear a genre in the music industry that has’nt been taited by the formula that if a certain sound sells jam it down the publics hears regardless of substance. The best of this Acid Jazz delivers especially for those who can appreciate jazz instrumentation,a solid hip hop back beat,a latin soul groove, funky club mixes and mellow R&B; vocals all together in one style of music. This music brings everything to the table and can be enjoyed in any setting.

One of the most popular netlabels blogs is celebrating its 3rd birthday! Yet, this jubilee is so different because instead of receiving presents we decided to give away one – the freshest compilation from the goodnetlabels.blogspot.com. Consistent notes devoted to nu- jazz, hip- hop and downtempo sounds – that’s what attracts our readers, but it’s hard to treat this blog just like another average music diary. Especially when the author, Matam, once in a while provides you with some mixes and compilations made by himself. You just got his mixtape recorded together with Master’s Voice and released few weeks ago. Now it’s time for his newest compilation to hit the streets – the ‘Jazzy Puzzle.’ You’ll find there artists such as Mead, BandFX, Crockram, Suhov, Scatabrain, and many more. Tempting indeed.
